Under the Veil of Silence:
Root’s prior work includes Forgery and the State: Illicit Printing in the Age of Empire (Ashgrove, 2016) and the edited volume Counterfeits and Conspiracies: Essays on Political Fabrication (Gerrard Press, 2020). His work is marked by an unusually close engagement with physical archives, including document authentication, ink and paper analysis, and the reconstruction of fragmented dossiers.
In The Forger’s Line, Root turns his attention to the mysterious figure of Alfred Muttings, whose criminal ingenuity and shadowy demise offer a lens into the moral ambiguities of a collapsing Europe. Blending rigorous historical method with an investigator’s eye for contradiction, Root reconstructs not just a life, but a labyrinth of appearances.
